Here’s a photoset designed to elicit third conditional sentences expressing regrets.
Each photo shows a non-ideal situation which may now be regretted.
Remind your students of the form, ie., wish with past perfect – I wish I had gone to bed earlier, I wish I hadn’t drunk so much wine last night.
Then show each photo and ask the students to identify what the cause of the regret might be. For example, he wishes he hadn’t eaten so much or she wishes she had brought an umbrella.
You could follow up this exercise by asking students what the people in the photos should have done. For example, she should have read the instructions.
